Dear Tom & Emily,

Thank you for responding to my recent email about publicity possibilities and for sending me your CD which I really enjoyed. It would be great to work with you and do a publicity campaign for your album. Feel free to call me anytime.

My PR agency recently publicized a folk singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist from New Orleans, an Americana singer-songwriter from California (who has written songs for Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, The Band) and a Southern blues-rock band.

I hear your music as crossing several of those genres folk, roots-rock, Americana, a touch of alt-country, and obviously acoustic-oriented singer-songwriter (which is part of the makeup of all those genres). I like your sense of humor on songs such as "Sliced Bread," "Trophy Wife," "Female Impersonator" and "The Computer is the Devil" (cell-phones are not designed for people with big fingers!). I think both of you sing great right in line with contemporary folk. But there is a bit of a retro, throwback element to your style as well, especially with the touches like harmonica on "Icons of faith" and the banjo on "NannyŠ" In fact, "Sliced Bread" reminds me of the very obscure first album (on Capitol Records) by the Manhattan Transfer before they hit it big (they did a song called "Java Jive," for example), or the Seventies work by Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. Speaking of similarities, The White Stripes are mostly considered a rockınıroll band (although Jack did some nice oldtime acoustic work on the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack), but on their ELEPHANT album they ended it with an acoustic-oriented song featuring Holly Golightly snging a duet with Jack and the song has an uncanny similarity to your "Pancake Mamma" tune. Also I wanted to mention that you saved some of the best acoustic-guitar picking for last. I really enjoyed the solos in "Nanny.." and "Lazy Fish."

Tom & Emily "Pancake Mamma," 2007
Tom and Emily are a beauty and beast duo that makes delightful music. Tom Proutt -- principle songwriter, guitarist, and rough voiced harmony singer-brings to the table a great sense of melody manifested in unusual harmonies and solid playing on a dizzying variety of six strings. Tom also brings his twisted vision: defending white bread against the accusation that anything could be better, offering a whole new meaning for the term "trophy wife." Emily plays bass and sings in pure tones that make Tom's perfect complement. The highlight is "Icons of Faith," the most serious tune on a record brimming with humor. Starting from one of those impromptu highway shrines to an accident victim, Proutt makes a spiritual quest to religious shrines all over the world, then returns to the personal loss the speaker has suffered. It's a song as moving as it is beautiful. I've never heard anything else like it. İ David Kleiner

Dear T&E -

Had myself an absolute blast this evening. Congratulations times 8 billion on the new disc. I'm sitting here listening to it for the 2nd time in a row. I absolutely LOVE it. SO many great songs, but I think I'm gonna shoot for the female impersonator song. I dig the 9 chords and major 7ths - those are my specialty (though I believe Jeff calls them "gay chords"). Still, I'm married, so I don't give a damn if those are the chords that I hear in my head most, and that effect me most. But most of all, goddammmmmmmmmn I wanna do Stone Lions, but I think I'm gonna go with the other. Lawdy, it's just so beautiful. Tom, I shant dare take on your unbelievably guitarrings. Instead, I'll record about 8 guitars, I think, all overdubbed, and then I'll call it an "interpretation."

Thanks so much for making such inspiring shit! I don't really understand where some of these songs come from. Just great.

Love,
p

Tom Proutt and Emily Gary's quiet collaboration led an imperiled existence until recently: though they began working together in 2003, when they first met while recording Proutt's album Farm Jazz, the two have been too busy as in-demand collaborators to focus on their own project. They frequently perform with Lisa Roberson, for example, and were both also involved with the similarly-minded debut album released last year by local songwriter Mary Gordon Hall. Read more...
